Com-Serve Experiences

Although they have little say in the matter, doctor’s have a tendency to make the best of wherever they are placed for their community service year. Here are some stories that might change the way you think about your options or placement.

Kuruman 1

Kuruman, Tshwaragano Hospital

Dr. Bianca Mostert
"This time, I was placed in Kuruman, Nothern Cape which I assume the placement department felt was probably close enough to my 5th choice, Kimberley. However, when you start off by having to google where you’ve been placed it’s not a good sign. Kuruman is not close to Kimberley, or anything else for that matter." - Dr. Bianca Mostert

Hoedspruit Military Hospital

Dr. Kate van den Aardweg
"This gave me the idea to fly to Hoedspruit and see if I could take her place, hoping that they would still need a com-serve doctor. So that is exactly what I did. With no official placement and nothing to lose, I bought a one-way ticket from Cape Town to Hoedspruit on the 3rd of January and pitched at the hospital." Allow Dr. Kate van Aardweg to explain why going to Hoedspruit will change your life.
